Job Description:
THE POSITION: (Candidates may perform these essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations. In accordance with the Food and Agricultural Code, routinely visit and inspect dairy farms, milk plants, factories, restaurants, and other places of business in Southern California where provisions of the Food and Agricultural Code relating to milk, milk products, and products resembling milk products are applicable. Collect official compliance samples for analysis. Test, certify and apply tamper evidence seals on critical control and recording equipment. Oversee facility construction and installation of equipment used in the manufacture of milk products for sanitary design. Examine, license and evaluate personnel who perform sampling and weighing, pasteurization, and laboratory testing for payment. Functionally supervise and evaluate the activities of Approved city and county Milk Inspection Services (AMIS). Gather, prepare and present evidence in the prosecution of dairy law violations. Perform specialty dairy milk product inspections. Cooperate with and assist other agencies on problems relating to quality and safety of dairy products. Assist and/or advise other Dairy Foods Specialists in areas of specialized knowledge or experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATE: All candidates wishing to be considered for this position must possess a valid certificate of registration as a Dairy Inspector issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: An extensive knowledge of the dairy industry. Ability to plan and organize assignments and projects independently, with limited supervision. Effective written and oral communications skills. Capability to deal appropriately with the public, industry and other agencies in accordance with the policies of the Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Analytical skills to evaluate and resolve difficult situations in the filed and take appropriate actions. Ability to use a computer for letters reports, notices and departmental communications via e-mail.
