Job Description:
Under general supervision, performs duties in the prevention of crime and the enforcement of law and order. Participates in, supervises and coordinates police operations relating to patrol, traffic, investigation, special assignment and other law enforcement activities. Participates in procedural development, interpretation of policies and procedures and analysis of crime and related service problems. Participates in the direction, training, mentoring and evaluation of assigned personnel, performs related work and all other assigned duties as required. Evaluates operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements and modifications; researches and updates policy and procedure guidelines. Supervises law enforcement activities and personnel during a shift or assignment period. Maintains discipline and ensures that department and hospital rules and policies are followed. Writes thorough and complete employee evaluations. Supervises and personally conducts complete and detailed investigations of general and specialized crimes. Participates in specialized operations which may include supervising a team, surveillances or serving search warrants. Review reports, provides recommendations/suggestions to officers. Coordinates investigations, patrol operations or special assignments and coordinates these activities with other law enforcement agencies. Prepares reports of shift activities and gathers data. Oversees facility security. Keeps subordinates up-dated and informed on any and all information that pertains to the performance of their duties by conducting daily shift briefings. Effectively communicates to all employees that sexual harassment and behavior leading to sexual harassment is unacceptable. Maintains and enforces non-discriminatory practices throughout the department and takes immediate action to correct and prevent any violations of the policies regarding sexual harassment and discrimination. Prepares appropriate documentation addressing violations of any policies or regulations and documents any positive or negative subordinate performance. Participates in all normal shift activities including enforcing local and State laws, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid, escorting patients and providing on scene supervision of hazardous materials incidents. Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in the Prevention and Management of Assaultive Behavior (PMAB). Possesses and maintains sufficient strength, agility and endurance to perform during physically, mentally, emotionally stressful and emergency situations encountered on the job; and sufficient hearing and vision to effectively perform the essential functions of the job. Assumes command of police activities during emergencies until relieved by a superior officer. Functions as on-site incident commander. Assists in budget preparation and administration. Maintains each shift or unit at full compliance with all applicable regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Monitors and promotes the implementation of all safety policies and regulations. Attends and actively participates in the supervisory meetings. Identifies training needs and conducts in-service training. Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; prepares investigations and other reports. Responds to citizen complaints and conducts informal and formal complaint investigations as assigned. Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in matters relating to the investigation of crime and the apprehension of offenders. Conducts uniform and equipment inspections. 20% Conducts appropriate watch/shift orientation, including supplying and explaining the post orders and instructions to new employees assigned to a watch/shift and ensures that all subordinates read and initial all Internal Communication Check Sheets within the specified time frame. Keeps command staff informed of important activities and critical incidents. Maintains open communication with all disciplines to assist in providing a work environment that is alert and aware of any safety or security problems. Promotes and assists subordinates in understanding the need to cooperate and work together with all disciplines in order to maintain a safe and secure facility. Encourages subordinates to utilize the available resources for submitting suggestions for changes and/or recommendations for improvement.
