Job Description:
Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Chief Physician and Surgeon, CF is responsible for the immediate supervision and function of Physician and Surgeons, CF, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants at High Desert State Prison (HDSP). Serves on various committees, attends meetings and provides treatment and care to the inmate population.Provides supervision and assistance on clinical issues to Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants practicing in the institution. Provides consultation to Nurse Practitioners assigned to On-Call Services. Evaluates their performance and prepares reports of probationary performance as well as annual performance evaluations. Conducts training and orientation for new employees. Reviews the quality and appropriateness of physician and mid-level practitioner medical charting and takes steps to achieve improvements where appropriate. Prepares and reviews reports to the provision of Medical services in an institution.Organizes and acts as chairperson or appoints chairpersons for committees such as Medical Authorization, Utilization Review, Quality Assurance, and Peer Review. Reviews inmate appeals regarding physician and surgeon services. Raises issues and recommends policy decisions regarding physician and surgeon services within adopted standards of care.Participates on behalf of physician staff in Health Care Management meetings and in meetings with institutions management staff. Fills in for the Chief Medical Officer/Health Care Manager in the Manager’s absence. Coordinates and participates in the resolution of health care service delivery issues between various medical professions on the institution’s health care services staff. *Salaries will be adjusted according to the provisions of the current furlough program.*
