Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Supervising Registered Nurse II, the Registered Nurse, Correctional Facility, provides direct and indirect nursing care to inmates/patients; collaborates with physicians and other health care providers; takes independent action within professional preparation and legal limits to maintain order; and supervise the conduct of inmates/patients to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property. Plans and implements nursing care including administration of medication, therapeutic agents, treatments, disease prevention, and restorative measures ordered by a physician; assists physicians with medical and/or minor surgical procedures; performs assessment and ongoing monitoring of inmate/patient physical and psychosocial status; evaluates effectiveness of nursing care and treatment regimen; collaborates with physicians and other health care providers; provides clinical supervision of other nursing staff to ensure quality patient care; documents nursing care in the medical record; ensures safety of inmates/patients; monitors work areas for safety and cleanliness; administers first aid in emergencies; maintains and prepares other records and reports.

**Starting salary (non-Bay Area institutions): $7,285

**Starting salary (Bay Area institutions*): $8,030

* Bay Area institutions – Correctional Training Facility, Salinas Valley State Prison, and California State Prison, San Quentin

**$1500 (one-time payment) – Upon completion of one (1) qualifying pay period; $1500 (one-time payment) – Upon completion of six (6) consecutive qualifying pay periods; $1000 (one-time payment) – Upon completion of 18 consecutive qualifying pay periods.

New civil service employees (individuals hired from outside State service) appointed on or after 01/01/03 to a classification listed above and employed at any correctional institution, performing satisfactorily, shall be eligible to receive the appropriate recruitment differential upon completion of the specific qualifying and consecutive qualifying pay period(s).

***Salaries will be adjusted accordingly to comply with the provisions of the current furlough programs. “Per Governor's Executive Order #S-13-09, issued 07/01/2009, this position is subject to a pay reduction of 13.85% to facilitate the three furlough days named in the order, which is subject to end on 06/30/2010. The minimum and maximum salaries indicated on this bulletin DO NOT reflect this pay reduction.”

Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): Possession of a current license as a registered nurse in California. (Applicants who do not meet this requirement will be admitted to the examination, but they must secure the required license before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)
