Job Description:
Pending Freeze Exemption Approval Multiple positions The Recreation Therapist (R.T.) is responsible for the direct provision of treatment services to the individual on the home unit and / or in the Wellness and Recovery Mall. Recreation Therapists serve as members of the Wellness and Recovery Planning Team. Recreation Therapists provide Recreation services to individuals within the overall scope of services, techniques, and programs authorized by the Recreation Therapy Service at Coalinga State Hospital. EF-1) Organize, plan and provide recovery-oriented courses/groups/ activities whose focus is dictated by the individuals objectives, as defined in the Wellness and Recovery Plan, and provided according to approved hospital design. Provide orientation for all new individuals regarding Recreation groups and leisure activities. Provide a monthly calendar of all Recreation therapy programs offered on the unit and in the Mall. Inform patients of other special events and activities available to them in the hospital (i.e. Monthly birthday parties, concerts, tournaments, etc.) (EF-1.1) Meet with and provide recreational therapy services for individuals who have identified needs. (EF-2) Organize, promote, implement or coordinate events (i.e. holiday recognition, special events) that may enhance the individual’s quality of life while hospitalized. Coordinate unit party fund expenditures. Meet regularly with unit activity coordinator to help plan unit parties and leisure activities. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment through (EF-3) accountability and supervision of controlled items used in RT activities, responding to preventive management of assaultive behavior (PMAB), security breeches and intervention or management of an individual’s behavior. Assessment, Planning and Evaluation (EF-4) Participate in the Master Wellness and Recovery Plan (MWRP), 14-day, and 30-day Wellness and Recovery Plan Reviews (WRPR) of each individual on your caseload or assigned service area, providing documentation of the individuals progress in the chart prior to each WRPR. (EF-4.1) Develop, review and update the Recreation therapy work component of the integrated assessment with each new individual, consistent with hospital policy and standards. Assess each assigned individual’s progress within their Recreation therapy activities and / or toward objectives identified in the individual’s Wellness and Recovery Plan, providing written documentation of assessment in the individuals Health Information Medical Record (HIMR). Gather patient assessment information through attendance in shift changes, Interdisciplinary teams, group observation, individual interview and chart review. Professional, Resource and Training Functions Participate in professional development activities by completing all hospital core training as scheduled, attending colloquia, special workshop, seminars, conferences, Service off-sites, continuing education, individual study or other avenues of professional development. Attend and participate in monthly Service meetings. Other Duties (EF-5) Recreation Therapists will maintain and manage their designated portion of the Program Recreational Activities Plan (RAP) budget, Patient Benefit Fund and patient donations. Recommendations for Program RAP disbursements will be submitted to the Program Director for approval. R.T.s will carry out approved budget expenditures in coordination with the Unit Supervisor and under the supervision of the Program Director. KNOWLEDGE OF: With particular reference to Recreation therapy, the principles, procedures, techniques, trends, and literature of Recreation services, especially those relating to mental, physical, developmental, or geriatric disabilities; the process of restoration, maintenance and development of capabilities; principles of mental health education; scope and activities of private and public health and welfare agencies; characteristics of mental, emotional, physical, and developmental disorders; current trends in mental health, public health, and public welfare; federal and state programs in these fields. ABILITY TO: Utilize and effectively apply required technical knowledge; establish and maintain the confidence and cooperation of persons contacted in the work; secure accurate clinical data and record such data systematically; compose clear, accurate and concise reports; interpret statistical data; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; communicate effectively. THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIPS/RELATIONSHIP SECURITY Demonstrates the ability to maintain professional therapeutic relationships with patients, to assist them with problem solving, and to teach/model principles of the norm of non-violence. Demonstrates good staff/patient boundaries and monitors and assists others to help them maintain theirs. OBSERVATION AND DOCUMENTATION Ability to provide accurate and complete reports, and documentation in accordance with professional standards, hospital documentation policies, and State guidelines (MHDS). ASSESSMENTS Ability to provide Recreation Therapy assessments as represented by the FSA-R, ASP and the process necessary to conduct treatment planning using the Clinical Delivery System and completed in approved time frames. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION It is the employee’s responsibility to maintain a license, credential, or required registration pertinent to their classification on a current basis. Any failure to do so may result in termination from Civil Service. Employees in this classification must: • Possess the equivalent to graduation from a recognized college with major work in therapeutic recreation, or in recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation, or certification as a registered recreator with specialization in therapeutic recreation by the California Board of Park and Recreation Personnel, or the National Therapeutic Recreation Society, or eligibility for such certification. TRAINING The employee is required to complete all required and / or mandatory training. WORKING CONDITIONS The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeat health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job duties.
