Job Description:
Pending Freeze Exemption Approval Multiple position 1. MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES Apply psychological knowledge and techniques to the problems of mental and developmental disabilities and other mental disorders; conduct various forms of group and individual therapy; conduct assessments; construct case formulations and progress reports; evaluate programs; provide training; and serve as consultants. 15% INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM MEMBER Participate in the Treatment Team process, including identifying treatment needs, designing and developing individualized treatment plans/programs, reporting and assessing individual progress and contributing to or making dispositional decisions as appropriate. Attend (and as required lead) all Treatment Planning Conferences for your assigned caseload, and participate in change of shift meetings occurring during your hours of work. Serve as Primary Clinician by coordinating treatment for a specific group of individuals as assigned. Dictate and enter the required information to construct the individuals’ Wellness and Recovery Plan, including those elements required by WaRMSS software. Complete reports and documentation in accordance with professional standards, hospital documentation policies, and State guidelines. This includes primary clinician and treatment progress notes. 15% PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSTIC FORMULATION Complete required psychological assessments and evaluations on individuals assigned to your caseload. Included are the initial-integrated assessment psychologist section, any transfer updates, and all targeted assessments deriving from identified behavioral triggers. Assessment/evaluation reports must be completed and documented within the required timelines, as specified by hospital policy. Reports must respond directly and adequately to the intended function of the assessment/evaluation, with particular emphasis on implications for treatment planning and discharge readiness. When clinically indicated or required, conduct a focused psychological assessment, which is to be documented within the specified timelines after identifying the trigger or receiving a referral from the ID team. Review the appropriateness and facilitate the completion of all ID Team referrals for psychological and neuropsychological assessments provided by the Assessment Service. Provide feedback in a timely manner to the individual evaluated, regarding findings of the psychological assessment/evaluation, and document his reactions to the information. 30% TREATMENT PLANNING Participate in the design, development, and refinement of skill training groups and recovery-oriented courses provided though auspices of the Mall, including the quality of the leader/participant manuals and course leadership skills. Participate in regular ConRep liaison meetings and semi-annual reviews of the relationship between hospital services and community program needs. Provide clinical case consultation to staff as needed and/or requested, including in-service training in areas of professional expertise. Conduct functional assessments of behavior and develop individualized behavioral treatment plans for individuals identified by the ID Team or in response to identified triggers. Assist in the ongoing development of treatment services provided directly or by others on the residential unit, its milieu, and through the Mall services. In developing treatment plans, demonstrate sensitivity to cultural and age-specific issues. Document individuals’ progress on a monthly basis for those receiving your on-going assistance and treatment. 25% DELIVERY OF TREATMENT SERVICES Provide direct treatment services to individuals, groups, and families/significant others as clinically indicated and consistent with areas of clinical assignment and privilege. This should include being the primary provider or co-provider of 10 hours of Mall courses or skill training treatment groups per week. Provide crisis intervention assessment and treatment services as needed. 5% FORENSIC EVALUATION AND COURT TESTIMONY Complete forensic assessments/evaluations as requested and provide expert testimony as needed. Provide training and consultation in forensic or specialized treatment issues related to the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) and/or Mentally Ill Prisoner (MIP) populations. Provide psychological testing, as required or needed. Demonstrate an understanding of the laws, civil and penal codes, knowledge of the courts, forensic institutions, and their relationships to applicable commitments, treatment, and disposition of SVP and MIP individuals. Posses an on-going understanding of court protocol, be able to make placement recommendations when subpoenaed, provide court testimony as an expert witness, and convey the opinion of the interdisciplinary team. Complete other assigned Forensic Evaluations as requested. 10% PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Promote and implement principles of Wellness and Recovery, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, and Performance Improvement. Promote an environment of peaceful coexistence, non-violence and safe work practices. Adhere to the Psychology Department’s requirements for approved clinical supervision. If qualified and with approvals from the Chief of Psychology, the Program Administration, and the Internship Director, supervise pre-doctoral interns and other Psychologist as part of that professional’s approved clinical supervision plan. Attend regular meetings of the Psychology Department and participate in any on-going performance improvement activities as requested. Complete all continuing education requirements and actively seek learning opportunities for professional growth and development. Assist in the design and implementation of treatment outcome measures to assess individual progress in the phases of change and acquisition of the necessary self-regulatory skills for successful adaptation to the intended dispositional setting. Support and participate in research of psychopathology, psychometric assessment, psychological intervention, behavioral prediction, and other basic or applied studies in order to contribute to scientific knowledge and improve the quality of treatment provided at this facility. Participate in committee assignments and attend other meetings as scheduled. Attend SVP treatment design team meetings, SVP program review sessions, and all assigned treatment enhancement workgroups or recovery-oriented coordination teams. Keep current in all required Core training as mandated by hospital policy. . 2. SUPERVISION RECEIVED The Psychologist is under the supervision of the Senior Psychologist or Program Director and is clinically accountable to the Chief of Psychology Services. 3. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Qualified, licensed Psychologists may clinically supervise pre-doctoral interns and other professionals to meet their licensure requirements 4. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF: Psychological theories and research; principles, techniques, and problems in developing and coordinating a specialized psychological treatment program; principles, techniques, and trends in psychology with particular reference to normal and disordered behavior; human development, motivation, personality learning, individual differences, adaptation and social interaction; methods for the assessment and modification of human behavior; characteristics and social aspects of mental disorders and retardation; research methodology and program evaluation; institutional and social process, group dynamics; functions of psychologists in various mental health services; current trends in the field of mental health; professional training; community organization and allied professional services. ABILITY TO: Plan, organize, and work in a specialized psychological treatment program involving members of other treatment disciplines; provide professional consultation and program leadership; teach and participate in professional training; recognize situations requiring the creative application of technical skills; develop and evaluate creative approaches to the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental disorders, to the conduct of research and to the development and direction of a psychological program; plan, organize, and conduct research data analysis and program evaluation; conduct assessment and psychological treatment procedures; secure the cooperation of professional and lay groups, analyze situations accurately, take effective action; and speak and write effectively. 5. TEAM MEMBERSHIP Demonstrate the ability to provide constructive team input based on direct observation of behavior and to interact professionally with all individuals and co-workers in the development and delivery of recovery oriented services. THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP Demonstrates the ability to maintain professional therapeutic relationships, appropriate boundaries, to facilitate prosocial problem solving, and to teach/model principles of peaceful coexistence and the norm of non-violence. OBSERVATION AND DOCUMENTATION Ability to provide accurate and complete reports, and documentation in accordance with professional standards, hospital documentation polices, and State guidelines. ASSESSMENTS Ability to provide psychological assessments that are completed timely and address the required specificity of content. SITE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES Possess knowledge of and attitudes consistent with the Wellness and Recovery Model of service delivery, including the Stages of Change, basic values/beliefs, and the individual’s involvement in designing his own recovery plan. Knowledge of the SVP commitment process, sex offender-specific treatment components, wellness and recovery model, and ConRep placement processes. Ability to work with Mall/group treatment providers, Positive Behavior Support teams, By Choice Incentive providers; demonstrate working knowledge of the sex-offender-specific elements of each Phase of the SOCP. Demonstrates the ability to implement the Wellness and Recovery treatment model by effectively leading/co-leading groups/courses, providing coaching on homework assignments and coping techniques, and encouraging progression through the Stages of Change. 6. LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION It is the employee’s responsibility to maintain a license, credential, or required registration pertinent to their classification on a current basis. Any failure to do so may result in termination from Civil Service. Employees in this classification must: • Possess a valid license as a psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology and possession of an earned doctorate degree in psychology from an educational institution meeting the criteria of section 2914 of the Medical Board of California’s Business and Professions Code. 7. TRAINING - Training Category = 2 The employee is required to keep current with the completion of all required training. 8. WORKING CONDITIONS The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeat health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job duties.
