Job Description:
Pending Freeze Exemption Approval MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under supervision from the Clothing Center Manager, performs skilled work in washing operations in a Clothing Program, to maintain and make minor adjustments and repairs to laundry machinery and equipment; may supervise, instruct, and work with employees and helpers from the patient/resident population. The Laundry Worker must have knowledge of the rules, regulations, and standards governing the operation of the hospital, including the policies and procedures of the Department of Mental Health. 30% Sorts and fills requisitions and distributes clothing/linen/supply items for units and clothing program. Assigns work and gives instruction and training to employees and to helpers from the patient/resident population, evaluates their performance and takes or recommends appropriate action; reports on the work progress of assistants. 30% Operates washers, starch cookers, extractors, tumblers, sterilizers, presses, and flatwork ironers; cleans, oils, and make adjustments and minor repairs to laundry equipment and machinery; prepares soap, starch, bluing, bleaching, and other washing solutions. 30% Receives, weighs, and maintains records of soiled and clean laundry; collects and delivers clean/soiled clothing/linen items; move heavy laundry items throughout the hospital. Cleans work areas; inspects personnel and working areas and maintains safety and sanitation standards. 5% Conducts and maintains accurate records. Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in the management of assaultive behavior (PMAB). Must be able to recognize and respond to all Safety Devices and Alarms. 2. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Clothing Center Manager 3. SUPERVISION EXERCISED The Laundry Worker may supervise resident workers or volunteers. 4. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles, procedures and equipment used in washroom operations in a laundry; general laundry practices and methods; use of chemicals in spot and stain removal; safety and sanitation measures used in the operation, cleaning, and care of laundry equipment and work areas; preparation and use of disinfectant compounds; principles of effective supervision. SKILL IN: Operating washers, extractors, tumblers, sterilizers, and other equipment. ABILITY TO: Distinguish woolen, cotton, rayon, and silk articles and fugitive colors; maintain and make minor repairs and adjustments on laundry equipment; prepare soap, starch, bluing, bleaching, and other solutions; instruct and work with employees and helpers from the patient/resident population; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; keep records and prepare reports; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification. SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Understanding of and willingness to work with the patient/resident population of a State institution; personal cleanliness; freedom from communicable diseases. The ability to stand for prolonged periods of time. SPECIAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Sufficient strength and agility to load, unload and operate industrial capacity laundry machines. Maintain a professional appearance; ? Appropriately maintain cooperative, professional, and effective interactions with employees, patients/individuals and the public; ? Comply with hospital policies and procedures. The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeat health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job functions.
