Job Description:
SUBJECT TO HIRING FREEZE....Under general supervision, patrols an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle, or is assigned to a particular post or administrative assignment with the intent of protecting life and property, preventing crime, maintaining order, enforcing laws, rules or regulations, conducting investigations, locating witnesses, apprehending offenders, writing reports, providing public assistance and testifying in court or other hearings. Police Officers work various hours and shifts. ** Essential Functions are denoted in bold typeface. Operational Procedures: Provides the basic principles and practices of law enforcement and maintains an environment that is as free from crime and disorder as is possible. Answers calls for service and institutes necessary enforcement procedures in accordance with the law, department and hospital rules and regulations. Applies correct proper methods of deescalating incidents or in taking individuals into custody, which includes the prevention and management of assaultive behavior. Possesses and maintains sufficient vision, hearing, strength, agility and endurance to perform during physically, mentally or emotionally stressful emergency situations and to perform the essential functions of the position. Responds to psychiatric, medical or other emergency situations to save life or property with the ability to analyze complex and intricate situations and select an appropriate solution or action. Answers inquiries and preserves good relations with patients, staff and visitors. Prepares complete, accurate, legible and grammatically correct reports in a timely manner. Testifies in court and other hearing locations and serves warrants and subpoenas issued by the courts. Initiates corrective action when necessary and maintains a highly visible patrol of assigned areas, especially during extremely busy times. Makes random patrol checks within assigned areas for any safety/security problems; and performs all other duties as assigned. Support Procedures: Support the function of treatment and evaluation in a maximum-security forensic facility and serve the members of our community. Actively participate in the community oriented policing philosophy that includes regular, frequent contact with all those served by the department. Provides assistance as needed to medical personnel in patient containment and direction. Interacts with both patients and staff during unit and area visits. Ensures that proper security procedures are utilized in all areas and that all employees maintain proper control of keys, alarm activators, tools, supplies or any other items which could jeopardize security. Administrative Procedures: Duties are performed in a manner that demonstrates the highest level of professional values, ethics, pride, knowledge and dedication to our profession. Utilizes established methods for addressing safety and security issues in all areas of the facility. Complies with hospital policies on discrimination and sexual harassment. Participation in departmental action teams and hospital-wide quality action teams is encouraged. Reviews and remains current on administrative directives, departmental procedures and legislative changes and attends scheduled training. Works with supervisors to reduce rumors. Understands and follows the rules and regulations of utilizing information obtained through CLETS or other restricted sources. Personal hygiene, uniform and grooming standards are maintained within the expected standards in order to portray a professional image. Interpersonal Relationships. Maintains open communications with all hospital disciplines. Qualified and certified bilingual interpreters will utilize their skills during the performance of their duties. Maintains a high professional standard of performance and conduct consistent with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics. Works cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies and hospital disciplines.
