Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of a Station Manager, shift supervisor, or lead inspector, Plant Quarantine Inspectors check trucks and private vehicles for compliance with agriculture quarantine laws and regulations.

This is an entry-level position with increasing responsibilities as training progresses. Newly hired inspectors are required to complete a training manual to assist them in learning regulations, operating procedures, and other job responsibilities.

Seasoned inspectors are expected to be able to work independently with little or no supervision and may be assigned lead inspector duties. Prescribed safety practices must be followed at all times.

Duties:

Plant Quarantine Inspectors are responsible for:

• Identifying plant material carried in commercial and private vehicles.

• Checking plant material for pest organisms, and determine pest introduction risk.

• Making preliminary identification of common agricultural pests.

• Submitting organisms for laboratory identification.

• Entering data into the computer necessary to process shipments.

• Disposing of rejected material in a safe manner.

Plant Quarantine Inspectors are routinely assigned to rotating work shifts in various environmental conditions, and must be able to work cooperatively with other employees and the public. The wearing of a uniform is required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS :

Self-motivation, dependability, and the ability to give and follow instructions are important qualities for persons wishing to successfully maintain employment in this position.
